Data Storage & Analytics

I rode out multiple re-organizations while at IBM. Sometimes, I inherited teams, and on other occasions, I was able to build them from the bottom up. Either way, much of the work I led consisted of Data Storage and Analytics in IBM’s Cloud Platform—BlueMix.

At the time, a robust mix of Legacy applications was being brought to the cloud, hybrid offerings with one-foot on-premise and the other in the cloud, and a handful of cloud-native offerings via acquisition. Team sizes varied, but outcomes were consistently strong.

Platform Category Pages

Role

Design Director

Objective

Drive a common set of interaction patterns across over ta dozen products and services.

Context

Users needed to understand the offerings for data storage and analysis. The purpose of the pages and calls to action needed to be clear.

Outcome

A common look and feel was provided to unify a previously disparate portfolio. Revenue increased 150% in six months of site launch.

Cloud Data Services

Role

Design Director

Objective

Apply consistent UI and UX to over two dozen products and services.

Context

Legacy application users at enterprises needed to leverage common data sets with less friction.

Outcome

Use of previously underperforming services in the data storage and analytics space increased +500%.

Predictive Analytics

Role

Design Director

Objective

Launch Predictive Analytics, a new service within IBM’s BlueMix catalog.

Context

IBM had a series of scripts called from an IDE that enabled predictive modeling. These capabilities needed a unified GUI by which to deliver value to end users.

Outcome

Shipping this experience on BlueMix allowed Data Engineers to model their data more streamlined. The resulting visualizations drove an at-a-glance understanding of data trends.

Developer Advocacy

Role

Design Director

Objective

Provide a dedicated space for a combination of Evangelism, Support, and Community Management.

Context

IBM maintained a site called Developerworks that suited the needs of general-purpose Developers but underserved Data Scientists and Data Engineers.

Outcome

A compelling experience resulting in 10x unique site visitors and 5x return visitors compared to Developerworks for users of similar applications in the IBM portfolio.

Spark Notebooks

Role

Design Director

Objective

Drive adoption of IBM’s Spark technology by simultaneously addressing multiple Developer touchpoints.

Context

IBM needed a way to interest potential users and buyers in leveraging Spark's capabilities in new and exciting ways.

Outcome

Spark usage saw a 7x increase in usage due to a combination of redesigned experience, developer advocacy, and promotional efforts.

Dataworks Lift

Role

Design Director

Objective

Launch DataWorks Lift, a new standalone web service for data migration.

Context

IBM needed to increase the amount of data stored in its cloud. A unified front end to migrate data to the cloud was essential.

Outcome

Users checked compatibility, built a new database, and migrated their data to the IBM cloud. This product's use drove a 200% increase in data under management.

People Profiles

Role

Design Director

Objective

Showcase the use of Social Media data alongside other 3rd party sources, facilitated by IBM.

Context

IBM was looking to prototype a dashboard with cross-industry potential. The solution needed to deliver on both predictive analytics and targeted advertising and marketing.

Outcome

The result of the effort led to a POC that addressed project creation and monitoring, focused segment analysis, and the ability to see detailed sentiment information.

Cloudant Redesign

Role

Design Director

Objective

Improve the user experience of the flagship web application for a recent high-profile IBM acquisition. Apply CDS Design Language.

Context

Database replication technology is vital to enterprise software, and IBM purchased Cloudant to facilitate this capability. A small-footprint team looked at what integration would mean beyond re-skinning the front-end.

Outcome

An experience that looked and felt like an IBM Cloud Data Service, a standalone web application that complimented service experiences on the BlueMix Platform.
