Design Languages

Joe has worked with many designers to create compelling User Interfaces and User Experiences. Design Languages enable users to interact with interfaces with a cohesive look and feel. Joe has delivered these several times and in multiple contexts.

Joe was a co-writer of the IBM Design Language System, the precursor for IBM Carbon. He then led efforts to stand up regional dialects of the DLS; Watson Applications and Services, Cloud Data Services, and Finance.

IBM Design Language

Role

Design Director

Objective

Co-create the first design language put into place across all of IBM’s product portfolio.

Context

Joe and two other Design Principals wrote the guide. They directed the application of the language across various contexts.

Outcome

Over 100 products adhered to this design guide within 12 months. An initial focus on Color, Typography, and Iconography provided freedom to designers.

Cloud Data Services Design Language

Role

Design Director

Objective

Consume the IBM Design Language and leverage it to create a Cloud Data Services-specific dialect. Unify a mix of net-new and legacy product.

Context

Cloud Data products and services needed a differentiated look and feel when compared to other portfolios. Before the guide was created they were not cohesive in look and feel.

Outcome

Over two dozen products and services leveraged the design language, driving outcomes for users who were joining the BlueMix platform for the first time.

Watson for Finance Design Language

Role

Design Director

Objective

Consume the IBM Design Language and leverage it to create a Financial and Legal-specific dialect.

Context

A combination of legacy product, net-new offerings, and acquisition company experiences needed to be brought together with unified UI /UX.

Outcome

A portfolio of product that reflected a modern approach to solving financial problems with data and analytics tools.

Watson Voice & Tone, Watson for Healthcare

Role

Design Director

Objective

Address disparity in how Watson-branded experiences utilized the IBM Design Language. Guide designers in various areas of the business.

Context

Target complex use cases for example designs. Create reusable patterns of interaction and data visualizations to guide doctors to better understand cohort-level activities and to see individual patient-level progress.

Outcome

A consistent application of Watson Design Language across all products. This included Layout, Visualizations, Iconography, Color, Buttons, and Animation. Clarity was provided on rules and what was intentionally left to product teams of designers to own.

Resideo Design Language System

Role

Group Design Director

Objective

Create and apply a cohesive look and feel to both Consumer and Installer mobile User Experiences. Take into account dozens of legacy product needs and multiple user types.

Context

As a consumer IoT spinoff of Honeywell, Resideo needed to unify its Air Quality, Water Consumption, Temperature, Energy, Security, and Professional Installation experiences.

Outcome

One Design Language system that had a light and dark mode to address varied contexts and use cases. Unifying the front end resulted in streamlined production and code maintenance for the developers.
