Joe was there when IBM decided to launch Watson as a set of three enterprise products: Engagement Manager, Knowledge Studio, and Explorer. He worked closely with the product teams in a high-touch manner as an Individual Contributor.

Soon after, he was asked to take over a beleaguered design team of over 50, continue to grow it, and restructure it for success. Before moving elsewhere within IBM, he structured the Watson Health team and led the creation of Watson For Education.

Role

Objective

Publish a set of APIs and Services that delivered on discrete AI capabilities. 

Context

Watson needed to be utilized in various contexts outside of branded products. The capabilities needed to be consumed by developers creating applications. 

Outcome

The first and second generations of Watson services and APIs were delivered to market with consistent use case management and clarity of purpose. 

Watson Knowledge Studio


Role

Objective

Enable technical Analysts and non-Developers to train a Watson Data Model without using a terminal.

Context

A first-of-its-kind application, IBM accelerated the development of WKS, which utilized the first version of the Design Language System.

Outcome

Users were provided Agency to load, annotate, and train Watson on their documents— creating a custom machine-learning model without code.

Objective

Enable technical Analysts and non-Developers to utilize a combination of Watson Services without using a terminal.

Context

Users were able to utilize a powerful new technology to drive business outcomes. The first non-SDK use of Watson.

Outcome

Researchers were able to make connections that may have never been considered before – leading to new insights and breakthroughs.

Watson for Education


Role

Objective

Communicate the value of applying AI to the education space for demonstration purposes. Duration of project was one week. 

Context

Educators continue to do a lot of manual tasks on an ongoing basis, from monitoring student performance to curriculum planning. IBM wanted to showcase what was possible when applying AI to the education space. 

Outcome

A lightweight user experience demo, leveraging multiple Watson services, was shown to senior management and used to justify the creation of the Watson for Education business unit.

Objective

Create a white-label experience for IBM clients who want to gain AI-enabled insight from commerce data. 

Context

Users in this space were accustomed to logging into multiple IBM and non-IBM products to access insights from historic and dynamic data.

Outcome

Users of varying types were recommended actions and the ability to set intelligent automation to achieve business outcomes.
